Desensitising Part 1
Desensitisation techniques are used to help hypersensitive horses become less reactive to stimuli in their environment.
This process involves gradually introducing them to different objects, sounds, and situations that trigger their sensitivity in a controlled and safe manner.
The key principles of Desensitisation include starting with low-intensity stimuli and gradually increasing intensity as the horse becomes more comfortable. Positive reinforcement, such as treats or praise, is often used to reward calm behaviour during exposure.
Training sessions should be short and consistent, allowing the horse to gradually build confidence and trust in its handler. It's important to be patient and observant, recognising signs of stress or discomfort and adjusting the training accordingly.
Desensitisation can help hypersensitive horses develop greater resilience and adaptability, improving their overall well-being and performance in various activities, such as riding, handling, and veterinary procedures.
Working with a knowledgeable trainer or behaviour specialist can provide guidance and support throughout the desensitisation process.
